Courses: enrollment statuses explained

Also called course completion statuses, these statuses apply to the course when a manager enrolls a learner. See a brief definition of each status.

Not Started

A manager enrolls a learner onto a course, but the learner has not started the course yet.

In Progress

The learner has started the course.

Pending Review

Applies to courses with assignment modules only: the learner has submitted an assignment, and the instructor hasn't graded it yet.

Some examples in practice:

• for a course with several modules of mixed statuses: when an assignment module is Pending Review, the status for the course is In Progress 
• for a course where the learner has finished all modules, and the assignment module is Pending Review, the status for the course is Pending Review

Completed

A learner has worked all the way through all the modules in a course. 

For courses with no exams or assignment modules, a Completed status is the successful end of a course.  

Passed/Failed

Passed and Failed are sub-sets of Completed status, applicable for scoring modules like exams or marked assignments. See “Courses: evaluate learners with scored modules for an overview”.

Scored modules can be Safety Made Simple exam or assignment modules, or SCORM or Tin Can modules that contain exams. See “SCORM and xAPI (Tin Can): overview” for an intro to these interactive modules.

For courses with 1 scoring module, this module's score is the score for the whole course. For a single exam or assignment module:

• learners need a score equal or higher than the module's passing score for a Passed status
• learners who get a score less than the passing score get a Failed status

In exam settings, if a learner fails their first try but has attempts left on the exam, their course status is In Progress. In their dashboard, the course remains in Enrolled Courses.

If the learner has no attempts remaining, their status is Failed. The failed course moves to Completed Courses.  

For courses with more than 1 scoring module, you can set an optional course pass mark. The course pass mark lets you set a Passed requirement for an average of the scoring modules. See “Courses: set a course pass mark”.

Note: If you do not set a course pass mark, learners who fail one exam module fail the whole course.
